I have been actively involved in BUSD since my student years. I attended Emerson, Willard, and BHS, as did both my kids.

I have been involved in BUSD as PTA, BSEP, and SSC member, on BUSD Audit and Budget Advisory Committees, as co-Chair (with Nancy Riddle) of the 2004 Measure B and 2006 Measure A parcel tax campaigns, and for nine years as Chair (or co-Chair0 of the P&O committee.

In the broader community, I was on the City's Budget Committee and Mayor's Budget Task Force, chaired the Peace and Justice Commission. I was a Board member of the Berkeley Community Fund heading its substantial scholarship program for BHS and Berkleey City College students. I was on the advisory committees for Congresspersons Dellums and Lee. I was also a long-time soccer coach (and board director) whose kids won a state championship, medalled in the national tournaments,, and played varsity at BHS.

I am on the Oakland USD Audit Committee and chaired the alameda COunty Grand Jury's Education Committee, which played an important role discovering the Oakland USD financial crisis and changing County responsibilities for fiscal oversight.

Finally, I was Oakland's City Manager.
